10 Years of Flux Online!


The year 1997 was a time of reflection, creation, and possibility. Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” topped the charts. James Cameron's Titanic debuted December 19, 1997 and became the biggest blockbuster of all time. Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson, founders of MySpace.com, were six years away from creating their international social-networking site, and the 1997 Flux Online staff created the magazine’s first Web site, inFlux. They set out to provide content beyond what was in print, while maintaining a balance between the written word and the design. Online editor Laura Esterman said, “…the thrill is in the transformation itself.”

With this 2007 edition, the Flux Online staff produced a renovation of its own. The outcome is a Web site that will be updated year-round, with new articles, photos, and multimedia. Keeping continuity and creativity in mind, we created the new framework by drawing inspiration from past Flux Web sites and commercial magazine sites. Print magazines have evolved over the years, developing a stronger Web presence. This year’s staff followed suit by creating an easy-to-navigate Web site featuring on-demand videos and audio to accompany our quality stories and photography. Features like "Behind the Scenes" look at the creation of Flux from the raw conceptualization of the first weeks to the intense days of last-minute changes. In this feature, the candid staff photos illustrate the dedication behind the magazine.

Each year, Flux changes the lives of the students involved. Their trendsetting work can be seen in the archives. Flux Online will continue to improve and develop into the unique vision of the staff long after the magazine has disappeared from store shelves.
