documentary John Rosman & Eric Rutledge

In 1928, following summer jobs on a film set, University of Oregon students James Raley and Carvel Nelson took on the ambitious task of creating Ed’s Coed, the first full-length, student produced film in the United States. However, sold-out crowds in Eugene and planned distribution couldn’t keep talking pictures from killing silent movies—Ed’s Coed was nearly forgotten. Today, former UO School of Journalism and Communication Dean Duncan McDonald and UO alumnus Bryce Zabel are trying to revive Ed’s Coed with a new film that tells the behind the scenes story of the motion picture created 80 years ago. They are Reinventing Ed’s Coed.
