To Market, To Market
So what exactly is a media kit? And how do you use it to promote a magazine?
As members of the business team, our first responsibility was to create a media kit for Flux. If you're wondering what exactly a "media kit" is, then that makes two of us.
I learned that it is a combination of information about Flux's history, what we do as a magazine, and how to advertise and distribute with us all wrapped up into an InDesigned-ed packet. Media kits will vary in content depending upon what type of organization they are produced for.
In case you didn't know, Columbia Scholastic Press Association gave Flux the Gold Crown Award for the past three years and the Best Overall Design Award in 2003. This is the type of information that potential advertisers and distributors are looking for.
All that said, the information in any type of medium is only as effective as the people who publish it. Our advertising team has hit the pavement for the past few weeks, media kits in hand, selling ads to local businesses. Our marketing team is currently out asking who will sell our magazine in their stores. The force behind the media kit, and all media I might argue, is the human element. The people behind the scenes are making it happen.
