Graduation Looms Large

by Melissa Hoffman last modified 2009-06-04 14:16
Technically, I am a senior. I should be graduating. But after studying abroad in Paris and deciding to add French as a third major, I won't be walking across that stage until NEXT June. This past weekend, my sorority held our annual Senior Brunch, where we share stories and say goodbye to each other before graduation and the parting of ways. I am graduating from Delta Gamma and entering into a new phase of my life - living with my boyfriend - but a lot of things will remain the same for me. I'll still be a full-time student, preschool teacher and volunteer. However, the place that I've called home for the last three years will no longer be my home. While I am excited to move on, part of me is almost wishing that I were more emotional about the whole thing. A lot of my friends are leaving in two weeks, and who knows when I'll see them next. I'm saying goodbye to my home, and Carole, the house mom who has been like a grandmother to me for three years, is moving back to Texas, her home state. Perhaps I'm simply not acknowledging the change. I'm so excited about getting everything ready to move that I don't have the time to mourn the loss of my days as a Delta Gamma resident. Journalism, too, is graduating. We are ushering print into its own new phase - smaller books and full online content - not just with Flux, but magazines and newspapers all across the globe. "Bitch" magazine printed a smaller book this issue, as did several other publications I read on a regular basis. There are plenty of people who mourn the days of journalism past - who yearn for the good old days, sans Internet. I have yet to embrace the Internet fully - I facebook, but I don't blog regularly, and I don't twitter. But I know it's only a matter of time before I make use of these social media tools. Change is inevitable. But it is also exciting.
