A Whole New World

by Katherine Miller last modified 2009-06-04 14:38
I feel very lucky to be learning about photography and journalism as a whole right now. As the industry is changing dramatically, I feel our generation has lucked out with our competence with the Internet and different media outlets as a whole. A lot of college students blog, have their own websites, make videos for youtube, and on and on and on. All these outlets are imperative to journalism today, and we come out of grade school (ok, that is an exaggeration) having mastered them. This new idea of everyone having a media outlet to spread their voice is amazing and also overwhelming. With all the people "reporting" to the world with their blogs and such, the lines of journalism are getting blurred, and i feel some of the importance of good journalism is getting lost, because it is so easy to find crap on- line, that you forget that a lot of it is good too. But there is pressure for everyone in journalism to branch out and gain skills in some areas of journalism they might not be as confident in. As a photographer, you are not only expected to take pictures, you are expected to be able to do some level of multimedia, be able to work final cut, blog, and even write stories. Coming onto FLUX, i thought my job was going to be to go shoot stories that were assigned to me, but it turned out to be so much more.
