Bowie with a Hangover

by Rick Olson last modified 2009-06-04 14:43

Shooting a portrait in a most uncomfortable situation.

I had to submit a contributor photo today for an article of mine that will be published this summer, and after hours of debate, I decided to use the self portrait I shot for my first Flux assignment. As I revisited the collection of photos from the shoot, I laughed my ass off and surely bothered the rest of the people hard at work in Ballmer.

The shoot took place in early April... at sundown... in the Willamette River. It took about 30 takes to get right because the flash was confused by my antics and would fire twice before shooting the frame, forcing me to open my eyes in the frigid water to count the flashes before popping up.

These pictures show the most uncomfortable smiles imaginable, one of which I look like David Bowie after a hard night on the road. Enjoy...
