for the love of lighting
my first, and far from last, experience with artificial lighting
I have always found myself gawking at magazine prints with such beautiful, flawless light quality, and I've always wondered how these photographers capture these perfect shots in the field. Was it luck, or did they just happen to be in the right spot at the right time? Was it digital manipulation? Well, it was probably a minor mixture of these two things along with a major dose of artificial lighting. I had never explored or even be around the world of artificial lighting before i joined the Flux team. When i thought about artificial lighting, I always thought of the studio, a controlled environment, and never thought about bringing the lighting setups to the outdoors. Silly me! So when i heard the Flux photographers were going to be having lighting workshops, I was so ecstatic - I was finally going to discover the secret of an almost perfect shot. The first day around lighting was, to say the least, a little overwhelming. There is just so much equipment, voltages/power to split, angles to think about, distances to keep in mind and on and on...It truly is an art form. Once we went over the technicalities and actually got to play with the equipment, I fell in love. My favorite technique was overpowering the sun, and I applied this technique to my self portrait. The setup was pretty easy; I had a mono light (bare bulb) about 2-3 ft. away from me with the sun lighting me from behind and highlighting my right shoulder. I was very happy with the result and cannot wait to go overpower the sun more (plus the technique just sounds so cool). I have so much to learn and can't wait to play with lighting more. Truly the best way to learn is through experimentation, so get out there and have fun!
