How Artificial Light is Giving Me Nightmares
Artificial light has become a very stressful subject for me this term, yet I'm absolutely astounded by what it can do.
I never realized the potential that artificial light has. When looking at photographs, I thought most of the creative tones and lighting effects were done in Photoshop. After seeing what my peers are able to do, I realized that light can completely change the outcome of a photograph. After taking Intro to Photojournalism, I decided I only enjoy using ambient light, because it is more natural or less confusing. At our second lighting workshop with Mike and Leslie, however, I fell in love with how artificial light can completely change a setting. Mike and Leslie gave us time to mess around with the lights, teaching us how to make a bright sunny day look like dusk. The effect it gave was so amazing.
Now my struggle is learning how to use artificial light - and let me tell you, it's much harder than one might think. There are so many different ways to light a subject, and so many more things that can go wrong. I think it's the possibility of not being able to figure out a problem that may occur doing a shoot that is holding me back. To work on this, I just need to rent light kits and mess around with what I personally like. I'm excited to see where this new found knowledge of lighting takes me, and what challenges I overcome while working with this diverse medium.
