My Constant Battle with Legality

by Rick Olson last modified 2009-05-27 21:23
It's week 8 now and I'm pretty sure Dan Morrison and Mark Blaine are surprised and relieved that I have not been thrown in jail during the course of the term. Over the course of the term, my work has put me somewhere in the gray zone, where it's harmless, but the fist of legality could be brought upon me. Thankfully I have good friends and a certain business willing to take the risk with me. As I posted in an earlier blog, rappelling off the grain silo at a brewery is probably not something the Oregon Safety and Health Administration would be too stoked about, and neither were the owners of Ninkasi. But after a little persuasion we hammered out a plan and my buddy Matt Frick and I pulled off our most memorable rappel. Getting arrested for canoeing the Mill Race would be a grand pain in the ass. Thankfully Peter and Tucker weren't concerned about it and fished for SuperSoakers anyways. Finally, the shot that proved most stressful was that of a climber ascending a building. I scouted Eugene a number of times, but everything proved too sketchy. That's when I took to the UO campus. Standing in Lawrence Hall, I could see a rooftop across the way and gave it a scout. Atop the building was a patio with a sturdy looking railing... bingo. I recruited my roommate and architecture student to be my subject and we etched out our plan right away. Looking as low key as possible with my climbing gear stashed in a gym bag, we had to sneak our way to the top, remaining as inconspicuous as possible... I have to admit, it felt a little like being a terrorist. With the anchor set up I made a B-line to the rooftop across the way, got the shot of my budding climbing Lawrence Hall and got out as quickly as I could. How did I manage to get my friends to agree to such actions? Simple. I told them to imagine how funny it would be to tell people "I got arrested for (insert action here)." They all agreed. At the end of it all, I received no violations, got some great shots and memorable moments, and earned the title of "Renegade Journalist" from my advisers.
