Portland Marching Against War
A protest against the wars in Palestine, Iraq, and a march for peace. "They say bailout, we say troops out!"
I was in Pioneer Square snapping photos of the International Pillow Fight in Portland, OR, when I heard them chanting. I bolted to the corner of Broadway and Alder, and saw a large group (400+ protesters) storming through the streets of Portland, marching for peace. I immediately dashed toward them and joined the center of the crowd, snapping photos, and questioning people around me in an attempt to fully understand the purpose of the protest and the goals. Signs for peace emerged above the masses, and a plethora of chants created a cacophony of sound up and down the streets of Portland. Passerbys stopped to watch the masses marching -- I'd never been in the center of a protest and have always watched from the sidelines, but jumping in and snapping photos, I felt a sense of purpose as a journalist. I marched with them for a short chunk of the afternoon. Being there made me want to pursue photojournalism -- to document change and aid in making a difference.
