College...What's Next?

by Melissa Bennett last modified 2009-05-27 21:50
With a week and a half left of college, I'm left with a bittersweet feeling. Sure, it'll be nice getting a job and making money and not relying on my parents. It'd be even nicer if companies weren't in a hiring freeze and layoff frenzy. But who am I kidding? College is amazing, and it's an insanely unique experience, and it's almost over. This makes me so sad. Never again will all of our friends be within a few mile radius, hitting up the same bars and restaurants. I will probably never get the opportunity to live with five of my really good friends again. I've had an incredible college experience, and I have also loved the J-school and the professors and faculty. In July, I leave for Thailand to teach English for one year. I'm so excited. Pretty nervous. It's crazy to think about next year and not picture myself in Allen Hall, or hanging out at Cafe Roma. The unknown is what is so scary for college graduates; it's also the most amazing feeling at the same time. We are all at a time in our lives where we truly can do anything. It may not be what our parents had planned for us. But with very little things to hold us back, the future looks pretty damn open. And for the graduating class of 2009, with a bleak job market looming on the horizon, the nomadic lifestyle is even more appealing.
