The Power of Multimedia: Playing for Change

by Sheena Jean Lahren last modified 2009-06-02 15:33
We all know that the power of multimedia is immense. We like to go online and get video clips of news stories instead of reading them. We spend hours watching hilarious videos on Youtube and then sending links off to friends. But multimedia isn't just for watching the news or laughing at a panda falling out of a tree. Multimedia can serve an even more important purpose, as I found out from playingforchange.com: It can bring people around the world together. Playing for Change is a multimedia movement with the intent to bring peace to the world. The team at Playing for Change travels to different parts of the world to record and film musicians playing songs like "Stand By Me" and puts all of these videos together. Playing for Change really made me realize the influence multimedia can have on connecting people. When I first was introduced to this multimedia, it definitely touched and inspired me. Watch the "Stand by Me" episode. Does this form of multimedia have any form of power over you as well?

Thanks for sharing this, Sheena. I've said it before, but Web networking can make changes. Kiva.org is a great example of an organization using Social Media concepts to create tangible results in third world communities.
